The second edition of our Scientists of Tomorrow contest for undergraduate students brought us many applications from all over the world.
Nanolive wants to thank all the participants for taking part in this year’s contest. We are overwhelmed by the amount and excellence of the applications, which made the selection committee’s decision hard to make. Entries were judged on cell image aesthetics, scientific value, enthusiasm, motivation and quality of the application.
The winner
We are pleased to announce that Almudena Medina is the winner of this year’s edition of our Scientists of Tomorrow contest! Almudena will spend one week this September at Nanolive’s headquarters in Switzerland to work on a live cell imaging project using the 3D Cell Explorer microscope. Congratulations!
The selection committee’s statement:
Almudena’s submission tells a simple story in an elegant way. Aesthetically, this image catches the eye and scientifically, the high quality of this live cell imaging is noteworthy. The choice of submitting a live cell experiment was of course well received here at Nanolive, as we always say: because live cells are amazing! Furthermore, we were impressed by Almudena’s natural curiosity for cell biology fueled by strong motivation, and the great professionalism that she put into the application. Almudena has a life-long passion for biology and we have no doubt that she is our Scientist of Tomorrow!
Honorable Mentions
Our participants handle a great number of cell lines and imaging techniques. The level of expertise and knowledge of each of them brought us to decide on no further classifications, but on honorable mentions. We are happy to share with you this year’s edition of Scientists of Tomorrow finalists! Congratulations to all of you!

Zaza’s image with its somewhat cosmic appearance and originality really stood out. He really impressed us, not only with his excellent academic background, but also with his extensive microscopy knowledge and understanding of the challenges that researchers face today. It was inspiring to learn about Zaza’s natural drive to explore the unknown.

Theresa has an impressive record of laboratory experience including optimizing protocols which proves her patience and passion for cell biology. We really liked her image of Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell-Derived Cardiomyocytes, proving her ability to work with sensitive cell types. These laboratory skills combined with a pleasant personality caught our attention.

Dawid’s combined interests in Astronomy and Biology and his interest in implementing both in his research is truly unique. We really enjoyed his creative submission video and of course, the beautifully captured live human ovarian cancer cells with Nanolive imaging. His passion for biology and great sense of humor are definitely noteworthy.

Erya’s remarkable capture of the dynamic process of NETosis was beautifully presented. We were fascinated by her capability to pick up on complex microscopy techniques in such a short time. These skills coupled with acute attention to detail are some amongst many of Erya’s attested strengths which grabbed our attention.

Corey’s submission has artistic depth and dynamism and presents part of his research on the regenerative properties of satellite cells involved in muscle repair after damage. He has a strong passion for microscopy and is ready to go above and beyond to understand biological processes which demonstrates great potential in the Biomedical field.
Public vote winner
Nanolive wanted to give a special mention to Nikhil Jha, Undergraduate student in Biotechnology at the Jaypee Institute of Information Technology, for his results in the public vote. His image achieved 32% of the total public votes (3458 votes). Congratulations!
